Hotel Orsa Maggiore

Getting to the hotel is convenient, close to the main station and Piazza Garibaldi, the terminus for two subway lines. The rooms are basic and have little soundproofing, which is a problem with the city center's constant honking, day and night. There’s no elevator, so you have to climb three flights of stairs. Breakfast is simple but okay, with bread, ham, cheese, fruit, juice, and coffee made to order.

We were sent to another hotel, Naples Garibaldi Square, because of a water problem. The rooms there looked quite modern, and breakfast had a good selection even though we arrived a little late. The brioches were a bit stale.

The view from our window was awful, facing another building where people could see straight in. The building is very old, sanitation was poor, and service was extremely bad. The staff were not friendly at all. The elevator only worked if you put 10 cents into its machine. We booked breakfast, but never ate because all you could get was cereal, and there was no water in the fridge either. Outside our window, every 10 or 20 minutes guys were using heroin and cocaine needles. It was disgusting. We don't recommend this cheap hotel.

The room was fine for what we paid, and the hotel is inexpensive (May '19). It's about 2 km from most sights, but very close to the main station and Porta Nolana, where trains go straight to Pompeii and Ercolano. The hotel itself was very noisy, with lots of sound from inside, so bring earplugs. The young woman at the desk had a remarkable way of making you feel like you were bothering her, and she didn't smile or greet us. That didn't affect our rating because it doesn't matter much to us, but it could change your stay if friendly service is important to you.
