Elio Romano's magnificent frescoes are inside the only church in Nissoria.

Beautiful paintings decorate the interior of this eighteenth-century church.
Dyane R.
The church that serves Nissoria began as a small oratory in the Torre district. During the Byzantine era, this area had an urban settlement inhabited by people of probable Greek origin. The original chapel had a simple cross-commissa shape and ran north to south. The present church was built alongside the founding of the town in the mid-18th century, under the Moncada-Ventimiglia family, who had held the Nissoria fiefdom since 1687. When it was first built, the church was modest and hastily constructed with limited resources. It only took on its current size and appearance after later expansion in the mid-19th century. In 1843, repairs included adding two side naves, but archival records indicate that the work was done on a shoestring, without qualified workers, and was never completed. The building remained in a precarious state. The façade and bell tower came later, funded by the government, the municipality, and the faithful. They were probably finished in 1878. The staircase and square in front of the church were completed in 1891. Apart from routine upkeep, no major work is recorded until 1910, when the central nave was paved. In April 1855, an Episcopal Decree officially made Patriarch Saint Joseph the church's Patron Saint, replacing the ancient patron Saint Gregory. Devotion to Saint Joseph had already spread through the small town in the first half of the 19th century. The reference also includes the number 9 at this point. The sacristy was worked on in 1939, including the corridor vault, a small room, and six large stained-glass windows, which gave it its present appearance. Bombings in September and October 1943 caused considerable damage, and repairs followed in 1948. Further changes came in the 1960s, when the central apse was modified in line with new rules established by the Second Vatican Council. Work on the nave floors followed in the 1970s. Construction, supported by private individuals, the Province, and the Region, was considered complete in 1999, when the church was finally consecrated, more than 250 years after its foundation.

This is the right place to meet our Lord Jesus. I also want to thank the Marta group. Thanks.

It's just an ordinary Catholic church.
