Agriturismo Canale

We’ve stayed here many times, and our children are always happy to come back. The family-run agriturismo has eight apartments, six in the old main farmhouse and two newer, larger ones in a separate building. All have outdoor dining space and access to barbecues. There are lovely gardens, plus a play area with swings, table tennis, and boules. The pool has a diving board at one end and a spa area at the other, with plenty of loungers, parasols, tables, and a covered spot for when the sun gets too strong. Every morning except Sunday, a baker arrives at 9am with fresh bread, pizza, croissants, and more. Montelopio is an easy walk up the track, and has a combined bar, cafe, and shop open every day. It’s a friendly place and highly recommended.

The rural setting is gorgeous, with lots of room for kids to run around, and the gardens and pool have lovely countryside views. Our one-bedroom apartment worked fine for us and our two-year-old. It’s about an hour’s drive from Pisa airport, but you really need a car here. The closest supermarket is down in the valley, a 15-20 minute drive away. May weather was awful during our week, so we took day trips to Florence and Siena, each about an hour and a half away. When the sun came out, the place felt idyllic. A bread van comes by every morning, and wine is available to buy on site at a very reasonable price. The staff were all friendly, and the Wi-Fi was excellent, which kept my husband happy. We also enjoyed the local market in Peccioli. The weather was the only real downside, since that can’t be helped. Next time, we’d choose a two-bedroom apartment.

Getting around the area really calls for a car. I’d especially suggest visiting San Gimignano, Volterra, and Peccioli. The agriturismo itself is beautiful and well cared for, with a relaxed, friendly feel. The team, especially Marianna, shared plenty of useful local tips for our stay. A great base in lovely Tuscany.

We’ve been coming back for 17 years. The views are wonderful and the swimming pool is fabulous, with good food nearby and easy access to Volterra, Florence, and Sienna. The local roads aren’t great, though that’s part of the charm. Tuscany heaven.
