The best part for our friends was the suites at Sotto le Stelle: beautifully designed, extremely comfortable, and equipped with every amenity we could think of. They said the stay topped even five-star hotels they'd experienced around Europe. We came to Picinisco with five couples so they could see my ancestral home, and spent a couple of days exploring the area. I’d worried our well-traveled friends might not enjoy staying in a small Italian town, but they loved it and called it the highlight of all their trips to Italy. The owner and his wife welcomed us with drinks in the lovely piazza overlooking the Comino Valley. They also put together an itinerary, arranged several drivers to help with all parts of the trip, shared lots of local information, and recommended excellent places to eat. Our friends were so grateful we’d brought them to Sotto le Stelle for such a distinctive trip.

We found it one of the most peaceful stops on our two-week trip. The cappuccino at breakfast was the best we had anywhere. The hotel and town are both beautiful, high up in the mountains, with great hiking nearby. It sits roughly halfway between Roma and Naples. Google’s directions can be confusing, so look for the square beside the church with two clocks. There are some lovely restaurants in town too.

The accommodation is one of a kind, and so is this part of the Italian appenine mountains. Definitely worth seeing.
