We slept really well, and with backpacks instead of four weeks' worth of luggage, we would have loved to stay longer. The staff were lovely, the location was great and breakfast was included. My husband and I spent one night here while travelling from Athens to Matera, and wished we'd had more time. Our room was cave-like, on the ground floor and had no windows. It barely fit the bed and bathroom, so finding space for our two huge suitcases was almost impossible. We had to leave them open and slide them under the bed. There was hardly any room to walk, and the low, rounded ceiling made getting ready tricky. I showered and dressed while my husband waited outside so we wouldn't keep stepping over each other. The shower humidity also spread into the bedroom and got trapped in the stone walls unless we kept the bathroom door shut. Not a big deal, just a tip.

The breakfast was decent, and the terrace staff were nice, but I couldn't wait to leave. We paid €200 for a room that felt like a pitiful converted cellar, at street level on a noisy square. It smelled damp when we opened the door, and there was a huge moth inside. More bugs showed up during our short stay. Before we had even landed, they were repeatedly messaging us on WhatsApp for our licence plate number and warning us about extra charges if we arrived after 9pm. The paid parking was across town, and we had to leave by 11am even though the lot was empty. There was no option to pay for more time. The front desk staff were inflexible and simply unfriendly. What a welcome to the South, in the worst possible sense.

Location is the only thing this hotel has going for it. The rooms weren't appealing and didn't look like the website photos. Our bathroom was disgusting, and the overhead shower didn't work. Gabrielle, the manager, said the previous guest had broken it. It wasn't fixed until our checkout day, and no compensation was offered. He really didn't seem to care. I would not recommend this hotel.

We came away feeling we'd paid for something we didn't get. Parking was a ten-minute walk away, and we had to leave at checkout time, so we couldn't even enjoy the area over lunch. The room was damp and noisy, we had to climb over each other, and the bed had no headboard. Another couple we met the next morning were in a similar room they called the “servants’ quarters.” We booked the standard double after seeing the hotel's photos, but it turned out to be a small, damp cave room in the courtyard, overlooking live music. The photos were there, so that's on people like us for booking in a hurry, but calling it “standard” is a joke. They could at least call it a “cave bedroom” instead of what felt like a storage closet. All in all, it felt like another tourist cash grab.

Breakfast was a highlight, with a spread of sweet and savoury local dishes. The owner, Gabriele, was very kind and helpful too. We loved everything about this wonderful place in the old town. The room felt exclusive, the bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was stylish. The roof terrace had a breathtaking, unique view.
