Albergo Casentino

I booked on a whim after the place someone recommended had no rooms left, and I'm so glad it worked out that way. This place is a gem on top of a hill by a medieval Duke's castle, with amazing views across the area. Poppi itself is a gem too. Between the service, food, and scenery, it feels like a steal. Definitely try the food and house wine. They speak English and take card payments, and I plan to bring my family for a holiday. The room was small but comfy and very, very clean. The view was gorgeous, and I really liked the old-timey furniture. It's an old, rustic building with its own charm, so don't expect fancy new things. The bathrooms are fully equipped and spotless. Did I say clean? Very clean. It's up on a hill, so expect some walking, but it's worth the effort. Try the food.

We ate there first as a couple and later with our family of seven plus a baby. There was a good range of dishes for both our vegetarian and gluten-intolerant diners, and the food was very high quality. The staff were great too.

The location was perfect, right opposite Poppi Castle, but the room we got was the smallest and darkest possible. We had to ask to move, and of the two rooms we requested, only one could be changed. The restaurant food wasn't good. There was a party happening at the same time and everyone's attention went elsewhere. Our dishes arrived cold.

That castle lit up behind us made the whole setting so beautiful. The food was fantastic too, and I had the best steak I've had in ages. Such a lovely atmosphere. I'd highly recommend it.
