B&B Sa Cruxitta

I’ll definitely come back. The hosts were so friendly and made us feel at home, and Marco speaks very good English and was keen to advise us on hikes and other things to do nearby. There’s a nice veranda overlooking the pleasure harbour, plus a spacious living room and kitchen guests can use. Breakfast was great too. I recommend this B&B to anyone.

Portoscuso itself is quiet, with only a few shops, restaurants, and bars, and some close in the off-season. It isn’t a big resort, but there’s a lovely beach within walking distance along the coast, and the town suited us perfectly. Don’t let the industrial area on the drive in put you off, it’s mostly out of sight once you’re in town. B&B Sa Cruxitta is a great base for exploring southwest Sardinia, with free parking right outside. We visited Sant'Antioco and San Pietro, Iglesias and Carbonia, the Nebida belvedere, and Porto Pino’s beautiful beach and dunes. We stayed four nights at the end of October and loved it. Signora Carmen looked after us so well and made us feel exceptionally welcome. She speaks only a little English, but still gave us lots of helpful tips for places to visit. Our room was clean and spacious, breakfasts were varied and delicious, and the view from the front of the building was stunning. We’d recommend B&B Sa Cruxitta to anyone.

We’ve stayed in hundreds of places, and this was the worst hotel or B&B experience of our lives. No one was there to greet us. When we called, we were told to go inside and find a room. The doors were left open to anyone on the street, and rain was getting in. We spent 15 minutes mopping it up. Then some unfriendly, rough-looking men arrived. They were day laborers using the place as a boarding house or squat, as far as we could tell. They weren’t wearing masks and were smoking cigarettes. They were rude and shut themselves in the kitchen, so we couldn’t use it. We texted the landlady, but she didn’t reply. We heard different men coming and going, slamming doors and talking loudly at 1 a.m. They all had terrible coughs, and we were afraid of COVID exposure. At 5 a.m. they were up again, banging doors and talking loudly, and we could smell cigarette smoke coming under our door. We put a towel at the bottom of it and even considered escaping through the window because we were afraid of exposure or of confronting them. We left before daybreak. When we told the landlady we were leaving and shouldn’t have to pay, she said it was the most “unpleasant” experience of her life, despite never being there. We never saw anyone managing the place, all the doors were open, and we had no idea who the men were. It felt like it had become a squat for workers.

We really enjoyed the B&B and how welcoming everyone was during our four-night stay. Carmen was especially lovely. We’d highly recommend this typical guest house in Portoscuso. Grazie mille!
