Al Vecchio Pioppo

Our three weeks in Italy had plenty of highlights, but Al Vecchio Pioppo was the best part. Gaetano and Antonella made the stay feel personal from the start. They showed us where to park for free, helped with check-in, and even found a particular kind of grain for my nonna back home. One evening they took us on a lovely walk, too. They also guided us by scooter to beaches around Praia a Mare, including the arcomagno and the beach by the Isola. The rooms were spotless and decorated just right for northern Calabria. Breakfast was a simple Italian colazione with coffee, juice, and enough nuts to get us going. We only wish we'd stayed longer. If you're after a genuine Italian experience, this place is much more than just a B&B. Thank you!

I ended up staying at Il Vecchio Pioppo for 10 unexpected days, and it was wonderful. My new friend Jessica Andrews of the Italian Vacation Specialist had suggested Praia a Mare and her friends Gaetano and Antonella for a true Calabrian experience. They warmly and generously showed me around this part of Calabria. I especially loved cooking with Antonella and Michela, their lovely daughter, the wine tasting in Lagonegro, Diamanté, San Nicola Archella, and the boat trip to isola di Dino. The Calabrese family and Calabria now have a warm place in my heart. You need to go see for yourself!

Gaetano and his family really went out of their way to make our stay special. The B&B is in a historic house, and we hope to return soon.

The beach is an easy walk from this great B&B, and the beds were comfortable. Gaetano and his family were amazing, and breakfast was great. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone visiting praia a mare.
