Casetta il Poggio was a comfortable place to come back to after days spent wandering Proceno and the countryside, with its pretty villages and historic towns. I was there from August 1st to the 15th, and the local events made the trip much richer than I expected. There was a “sagra dell’aglio” (garlic festival), where I learned there are different kinds of garlic, and a “sagra della bruschetta” that showed me how local olive oil makes a difference. I also caught a week of vineyard wine tastings. Many towns had their own religious, food, or wine festivals. I visited places I already knew about and others, including Castel Giorgio, Sorano, Pitigliano, and Lake Bolsena. The region is truly lovely, and I came away with much more than the relaxing holiday and local flavors I'd planned on. I'll definitely return to Casetta il Poggio on my next trip to Italy. I chose the townhouse for its central location and reasonable price after finding that many places to stay in the area were beyond my budget. I also didn't want to be isolated in the countryside. Ruth and Gianni welcomed me warmly and showed me around the home and town. In the historic center, I could easily pick up groceries or have a drink at the local café. I liked the Tuscan tiles and local décor, and the well-equipped kitchen let me cook a few Italian dishes. The stone-inlaid shower was a lovely extra.
