The online photos are very misleading. The place is past its best and feels like a dump. The washrooms were falling apart, shower walls included, and the water never got warm, so I skipped my shower on the second day. One washroom they sent me to was closed completely, and I had to drive to the other bad one. There was a burned-out car under a tarp, and some sketchy people in the bungalows asked me to take one of them into town on my moto.

We had such a great time here. It's cheap, there's a bar, and the train for Rome is a 25-minute walk away. The people are amazing, and it feels like the place has somehow forgotten that time moved on. Half the businesses are closed, but everyone carries on as if they're still open. If you want a basic camping or cabin stay, or you're after somewhere more traditional, this isn't for you. I'll stay here whenever I'm back in Rome. Just book the whole cabin if sharing isn't your thing.

The setting is lovely, a rural old sandstone quarry with lots of trees and shade, even though it's right next to Rome. Campervan pitches are spacious, and because the grass isn't mown, you get a lovely crushed-herb smell as you walk around. It's very quiet. The site itself, from the chalets and sheds to the pool and cafe, feels shabby, neglected and mostly unused, like an abandoned Pontins crossed with Chernobyl. Cleanliness in the showers is hit and miss, mostly miss, so wear Crocs. The toilets that work and are accessible are almost nice, but take paper just in case, and you may need to brace the door with your foot. As for the wild boar at night, I'll report back.

A dead rat beside the pool was one sign of how dirty the whole place was. Our room was tiny and unbearably hot, with no proper ventilation. We knew when booking that it was a camping-style stay with shared bathrooms, but we didn't expect dead bugs and such filthy, unhygienic facilities. At checkout, my mom and I were talking by reception while waiting for a taxi. The receptionist rudely told us to go outside because she was working, effectively sending us into the 40-degree sun. She had served us earlier while smoking a cigarette, which made her attitude even harder to understand. I absolutely don't recommend it: awful service, dirty conditions and rude staff.

My friend found this place, and I agreed because I've stayed somewhere similar before. But those other places didn't have bugs and spiders hanging from the ceiling. It was a long, difficult journey to get here. The shared bathrooms and showers looked terrible. Is it cheap? Yes. Is it fine? Definitely not. I don't usually write reviews, but I couldn't give zero stars, so here's one: worst place on earth, don't come.
