The atmosphere was absolutely five-star, with lovely table linen and decor, good food, and friendly, professional people in the downstairs bar. The restaurant staff were a group of young, very friendly waitresses in nice uniforms, probably fresh out of a good hotel school, and the service was great. You can see how much care three generations of owners have put into building this hotel. The owner runs things from an enormous desk at the top of the entrance stairs and clearly knows how to give guests a great experience. If you value old-world charm and quality, this is the place. If you're after slick, Instagrammable stuff, stay away. We loved it. Please don't change, or give in to silly modern ideas like paper towels. You're right, the others are wrong. ;-)))) A few bits of Italian etiquette for Germans and Americans, since they were at tables beside us: 1. Don't ask for Parmigiano on white pasta. There's a reason they don't bring it, it doesn't belong there. 2. Don't order cappuccino after a meal. It's a morning drink. 3. Don't put water in your beer. 4. Don't tuck pasta between a folded piece of bread. We're not in Kansas. 5. Don't get up to fetch condiments from the serving table. Just ask, or maybe learn four words of Italian. 6. Don't use your phone in a restaurant. It's rude and shows contempt for the people cooking for you.

After the long walk up the mountain, we wanted something refreshing, but the waiter took ages to come over. He was so slow it felt like time might go backwards. For a quick drink, it's better to order at the bar and carry it up the mountain, where you can enjoy it in peace and avoid the street crowd.

The coffee and brioche were okay, and the service was fine. We stopped for one last cappuccino in Italy before heading home, but the prices at two bars on the same level were different, and I don't understand why. They also charged us €2 for "coperto" just for serving coffee. I'd never encountered that in Italy before. After paying, I asked to use the toilet and was told very rudely that it was only free for guests. Thank goodness I'd had my coffee first! I understand that toilets in a place like this can be in high demand and that this can get annoying, but I felt really uncomfortable having to defend myself to an angry Italian waitress. We definitely won't go back.

It's a lovely place, and the drive up the mountain is nice, though there's a lot of second gear. The restaurant is nice too, while the rooms are basic and have Italian plugs. We were able to get a room when we arrived, even though it was strange there wasn't a booking system. WhatsApp got a better response than email. You can have a meal when you get there, charged to the room, but the kitchen closes at 8 pm.

We spent two days at the top of the pass and popped in several times for coffee or a slice of pie. The staff were so welcoming, and the coffee was delicious. It's a really cozy place I'd recommend without hesitation.
