The setting was lovely, and the housekeeping staff were friendly, but our stay was a really unpleasant experience. At nearly €190 a night, the very modest breakfast and the way we were treated made it poor value for money. We’ve travelled a lot, together and separately, and never had an experience like this before. The worst part came at checkout. The owner charged us another €45 on top of the amount we had already paid through Booking.com. We understand there was a city tax, but for two people over three nights it should have been under €10. When we tried to sort it out, he lost his temper and insulted us as Finnish tourists, saying there were always problems with us and that we drank too much. He used some very offensive words. We admit we swore too after he insulted us. Things had already gone badly from the start. Before we arrived, communication was easy and our small requests were accommodated. But when we got there, nobody was available to welcome us and no one answered the phone. By chance, the owner’s mother walked past and gave us the room key. We were never properly checked in. The bed in our room was broken. The owner challenged what we told him and reacted unprofessionally, but after a brief discussion he checked underneath it himself and saw the problem. To get another room with a working bed, we had to cancel our original Booking.com reservation. The owner asked us to hide the real reason for cancelling so he wouldn’t get a bad reputation on Booking as a host. The room was clean and pleasant. Still, the owner felt that messaging about the room or asking for an extra blanket was already more than “guest care” should involve. He even told us outright to say that Finnish tourists aren’t welcome there. The beautiful surroundings couldn’t make up for his inappropriate, offensive, and unforgivable behaviour.
