Residence Il Palazzo

The building itself is lovely, as was the entrance and our room, and it sits at the foot of the historic village. But the welcome was so poor that we cut our planned two-night stay short and didn’t eat there as we’d intended. We wouldn’t return. We had four cases, two weighing more than 25 kg, and stopped opposite the entrance just to unload. A young man curtly told us we couldn’t park there. He didn’t greet us or offer help, then walked away. When I came in alone carrying all the heavy bags, he sat without saying anything before showing me the room. The room was up very steep stone steps. He walked ahead and watched me, a 73-year-old man, carry the cases up one at a time. He even stood there while I struggled with the last three steps and final bag, then passed me and went downstairs. That was disgraceful. Breakfast was a mess and wasn’t replenished or tidied. There was no toaster, so no toast, and I had to get up seven times to find a spoon hidden under a cloth by the kitchen, milk, butter, a cup, tea bags, two yoghurts and a bowl. It was a total sham.

I’d come back even if there were other places open. On a Wednesday night it was the only restaurant open in Santo Stefano di Sessanio, and luckily it was delightful. The vaulted ceilings and rustic interior were lovely. The menu was limited because it was off season, but everything I tried was delicious: gnocchi with saffron, cream and walnuts, grilled vegetables and dessert. If you’re coming from town, it’s safer to drive. There’s no sidewalk on the road from the historic center, and walking feels a bit dangerous. A very large free parking lot is across the street. 😂

I live in Italy and eat out often, but only review places that stand out. This one does. The lentil soup may be the best we’ve ever had, the vegetables were top quality, and the mixed grill was nice. The manager looked after us well and helped us choose from their many Montepulciano wines. Wonderful service, excellent food and good value.

The atmosphere was wonderful, and the people were friendly. We had great service and fresh local food. The regional lentil soup was especially good. One of the best meals we had in Italy. Highly recommended.
