Casa de Maddalena - Antica Torre del Nera

The spa is spacious and clean, so it never felt crowded. We also liked the thoughtful restoration of the rooms, and the hotel was just what we wanted for a taste of the Umbrian countryside in a beautiful little village. The restaurant food was good, though quite expensive. One winter tip: the heat can get very strong, so a room below the top floor may be more comfortable.

We didn’t realize when we booked that the hotel owns so much of the upper part of town, with sweeping mountain views. The restaurant downstairs was lovely for both breakfast and dinner. Rooms and facilities were impeccable, and the spa, pool, sauna and hammam all have incredible views. It felt like real luxury. We had an amazing stay and would definitely return.

Breakfast was great, and we really enjoyed the spa. The hotel is a hidden gem in Umbria, with clean, roomy rooms and comfortable beds. We stayed for two nights in September before our wedding. Dinner at the hotel restaurant was only average, though, and we preferred the places at the bottom of the hill for lunch and dinner. Getting back to the room at night also means walking up a steep hill in the dark.

The staff were lovely and attentive, and I thought the value was great. Torre del nera is tucked away in Scheggino, in the Nera vally, about 20 minutes from Spoletto. It feels unique and off the beaten track, even for Umbria. Our room was beautifully decorated, with a wonderful view over the green valley and flowing river. I loved it and hope to come back soon.
