We had a really good time at Poggio Velluto, and the house has a lot going for it. It’s beautifully placed, with magnificent views and a very large, comfortable pool. The secluded setting keeps things peaceful, and the original style gives it a real Tuscan country-house feel. It’s spacious, with good privacy between groups thanks to hallways, separate bathrooms, two kitchens, separate entrances and garden exits, plus dedicated terraces and gardens. You could even split it between two families. The owner is a friendly, smiling host who checks in daily and is always ready to help. You can buy local wine from his vineyard and proper olive oil from him. The grounds are large, with parking and access to the house from either side despite the hillside. There’s a summer dining room outside, bikes, a summer laundry room, a real bread oven and chopped wood ready to use. The owner cleans the pool every day on top of its automatic system. Plenty of loungers, umbrellas and tables are set out by the pool, though the shower is a bit disappointing. There are some drawbacks, mostly around the decor and upkeep. The house is filled with porcelain dolls, a fake rooster and cat, vases, bowls and artificial flowers. We found it cluttered and impractical, and the ornaments collect dust and local bugs. The country-house atmosphere also means the cleaning isn’t very thorough. There’s dust around the house, which may be an issue for families with small children or anyone sensitive to it, especially as some parts are over 100 years old. During our stay, bad weather brought heavy rain and hail, and the roof leaked in several places. Luckily there were enough buckets and bowls, so we didn’t get flooded. We joked that the ugly dolls might be the sisters of Annabelle and had criminal intentions, so we locked them and their dresses in a black box for the full two weeks. No casualties! The flaws were more funny than serious for us, and our overall opinion is positive. We recommend the house, though people with very particular tastes in decor might not enjoy it. It’s a proper Tuscan country house, with hills and cypresses all around and no neighboring houses, so there’s complete privacy. The pool is fantastic, and the owner is very friendly and easy to talk to.

A huge pool, a lovely quiet atmosphere and a magnificent house. Definitely a place to remember!
