The hotel turned out to be a great choice. It's well located, the staff are very pleasant, and my room was spotless with a really comfortable bed. I'd picked it because it said there was an escalator up to the piazza, but I was surprised to find five of them. Breakfast was included, the usual continental style, and it suited me fine after all the "yadah, yadah" in Rome. Just keep in mind that the train station is miles from anywhere, so you'll need a taxi to get wherever you're going.

Breakfast was a letdown, with burnt croissants, canned fruit, and lots of packaged shop-bought items. The machine juices tasted artificial and off. Housekeeping was minimal too, just pulling up the sheets instead of properly making the beds. The room itself needs renovation, with dated furniture and maintenance problems. Its TV was shockingly tiny, smaller than most computer monitors and hard to watch from bed. The location is convenient, but the accommodation and service quality need a lot of work. I wouldn't recommend staying here unless they make significant updates.

The staff were kind and helpful, and the €7-a-day on-site parking was a real plus. The hotel is just outside the walls, opposite the escalator that goes up to Siena's historic center, which makes getting around really convenient and enjoyable. The rooms were clean, nice, and comfortable, with a fridge you can plug in if you need it. Bathrooms are spacious and very clean, with large built-in showers, though the showers tend to flood the bathroom and staff know about it. There aren't cloth shower mats, so you might want to ask for extra towels. Breakfast had a good range, but there's no proper bar service: coffee and cappuccino come from a single automatic machine, and there's usually a line. I think the manager should deal with that. In my opinion, the price could be a little lower for a 3-star place, though Siena seems costlier than other parts of Tuscany.

Hotel Moderno is very close to Siena, with easy access to Duomo di Siena and the city's historic sights. It's a very good option for large groups, and solo or couple travelers are welcome too. They also have a special restaurant menu for groups.
