When we visited, the University of Siena was holding a graduation ceremony, which made the square feel even more festive and colorful. Piazza del Campo is Siena’s historic center, a famous medieval square with a distinctive shell shape and lovely brick paving. Cafés and elegant palaces ring the piazza, with Palazzo Pubblico and its iconic Torre del Mangia standing out.

We stopped for lunch, taking in the views and the busy atmosphere. The square’s concave slope also has a practical side: it channels rainwater toward the city’s underground drainage system, away from local businesses. At the lower end stands Palazzo Pubblico, Siena’s Gothic town hall, built between 1297 and 1310. It was the governors’ headquarters and still serves as the active city hall, including for weddings. One was happening while I was there. Piazza del Campo was paved in red brick in 1349, on sloping ground where Siena’s three original hilltop communities met. Its shell-shaped layout is often counted among Europe’s greatest medieval squares. White travertine divides it into nine symmetrical wedges, honoring the nine members of the civic group that governed the Republic of Siena during its golden age.

Even on an ordinary day, Piazza del Campo has plenty of life and character. During the Palio di Siena, it really comes alive. With historic buildings all around, it’s an easy place to sit, relax, and watch people go by. Its unusual shell shape makes the heart of Siena instantly recognizable.

The square was comfortably busy, with locals and visitors taking photos, relaxing, and enjoying the cafés and architecture, but it didn’t feel overcrowded. The pleasant weather added to the atmosphere. As part of our guided group, we got a good sense of why Piazza del Campo matters. On our May day trip to Siena, seeing the famous shell-shaped piazza in person was a real highlight. Our guide explained its role in Siena’s civic life since medieval times and its tradition of hosting the Palio horse race twice a year. Hearing that history while standing there made the visit more meaningful.

I learned that the square is especially known for the Palio di Siena, a centuries-old horse race that turns it into a vivid, intense spectacle. Piazza del Campo sits at the center of Siena and has a charm that pulls you in. Its distinctive shell shape and warm, earthy colors make it one of Italy’s most beautiful and unusual squares.
