We loved the apartment at Palazzo Gancia. It was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed. From the building’s gorgeous, welcoming feel to the sea views and easy walk to restaurants and just about everywhere, the stay was a pleasure. The best welcome, though, came from Willy, the lovely yellow Labrador at the front door. We’d happily come back.

Willy the Labrador was so friendly, and the kids loved taking him out for walks. The owner was lovely too. We'd like to return.

Sebastiano made us feel very welcome, shared some fascinating history, and gave us useful tips. The Palazzo itself has a lot of history and cultural value, which made the stay especially interesting. We enjoyed coffee and croissants by the sea at breakfast, with a wonderful view. The location was excellent and the sea view spectacular. Our loft was comfortable, though in the cold weather we wished the blankets or bedding were warmer. In the afternoons, Willy would come say hello, and the kids loved him.

Willy is such a sweet, friendly dog. From the palazzo balconies we also got a lovely view of the sunrise. Sebastiano gave us a great tour and explained the building's history. The rooms were spacious and clean, and the location made it a short walk to Ortigia's main attractions.

The beds and bathroom were clean, and when we reported the broken toilet seat on arrival, the host fixed it while we were out. We only stayed one night of the two booked and got a refund for the second. The shower was close to unusable: the water wouldn't drain, pressure was poor, the cubicle was tiny, and even at 5ft I struggled to get my shoulders wet. I won't go into every detail here. The host was extremely helpful on WhatsApp, but didn't take criticism very gracefully. The room wasn't the one described on Booking.com, and there was neither a garden view nor a sea view. A couple of potted plants don't make a garden, and there's no space for one. The sea view rooms listed weren't available. Construction left the whole place dusty. We also saw droppings in the open apartments being renovated and smelled strong dog urine in the palazzo. The dog seemed to spend all day alone, looking for attention, and I didn't see water left out for him. He smelled and needed grooming. I saw plenty of signs of neglect. The host will probably deny this, but I have photos and video. We left the palazzo and Siracusa after this. We're well travelled, and this wasn't our first trip away from home.
