The location was great, just a short walk from the bars and restaurants, and the pool area was the one real saving grace. We could relax there and get drinks and food from the bar. The pool towels and safe are free, too. It sits on the main road, so there’s traffic noise, especially in a front room. The rooms were okay but dated, though they were cleaned and tidied every day. Breakfast was very basic and repetitive, although the coffee was nice. It doesn’t live up to the claimed four stars, more like three at best.

The rooms were basic but clean, and asking for extra pillows was no problem. The location was great. My only downside was breakfast on departure day. Our pickup was at 7:10 a.m., and we had to leave then. Breakfast started at 7, and when we asked a couple of days ahead, they said they couldn’t offer it earlier or even give us a cup of coffee before we left. We paid for seven nights of bed and breakfast but only got six breakfasts.

The balcony looked out on an ESSO sign and a road, which was a letdown, and the beds were so short my feet hung over the end. There were ants in the bathroom too. Food was bad from the start: barely edible at first, then the pizza smelled like sweaty feet, the risotto was stuck to the plate and smelled and tasted awful, and a girl with a kiwi allergy was served kiwi in her dessert. Somehow the stay kept getting worse. If you plan to spend your days out and eat elsewhere every night, maybe it could work, but I’ll return to Sorrento and definitely won’t stay here again.

The family has run Hotel Ascot for two generations, and that warmth came through in the friendly welcome and helpful advice. Breakfast and lunch were fresh, tasty, and comforting, with a home-cooked feel. From the central location, we could walk to restaurants, cafés, and the shopping area, and the atmosphere felt lively but relaxed. Positano, the Amalfi Coast, and Ravello were also an easy 25-45 minute ride away by taxi or local bus. A good base for exploring, or for a comfortable stay in the center of town.

We had a good-sized room with a small fridge, though the shower cubicle was cramped and water sprayed in every direction from the shower head. Pressure was fine. The pool was handy for cooling off, and there was a pleasant bar and garden to sit in. Staff were friendly and helpful, especially the ladies, and housekeeping kept our room tidy each day. It’s an easy walk to the marinas, main squares, shops, transport, and nearby restaurants. Just be ready for plenty of traffic noise, especially scooters and ambulances from the hospital across the road.
