The house itself is pretty, and it could feel grand with better amenities, but it was bare bones and a long way from town. Taxis were expensive. The grounds were overgrown, and there were ants inside. We also found no paper towels, trash bags, cleaning spray, or dish soap. When we asked for those things and toilet paper, the host described them in a review as “items of personal use.” We wanted to clean the tables and counters after ourselves, as you’d expect to be able to do in an Airbnb. The bigger issue was a €100 cash deposit “Giovanni” tried to collect when we met the caretaker. It hadn’t been mentioned in the Airbnb listing, and we had no confirmation we’d get it back, so we refused. Another guest had also described this surprise deposit. We paid the city tax by credit card, despite the host later claiming we wouldn’t pay it. The deposit was the payment we objected to. We were respectful and stayed in touch with the caretaker when an emergency changed our plans on checkout day. Checkout was 10am, but the cleaners arrived at 9. We thought we had a good rapport with the caretaker, but clearly we’d misread that.
