The food is incredibly generous, and the staff are warm and welcoming. The rooms are simple and rustic, while the quiet hillside setting among olive groves is spectacular, with a panoramic view of the valley far below.

The food was the real highlight for us. We had dinner and breakfast, and it was some of the best we ate anywhere in Italy. This old hunting lodge is full of interesting things, with large, comfortable rooms and an amazing view. It's tucked away but makes it easy to visit both Spello and Assisi. I'd definitely stay again.

Coming back to Il Bastione after nine years was lovely, especially seeing Jacapo and Luciano again. They're such warm hosts. Jacapo's grandmother was the chef when we visited before; now Jacapo cooks, and his country-style food is delicious. Breakfast and dinner are so generous that we tried to keep lunch small. We were warned not to finish the antipasto plate or we'd be too full, but it tasted too good to leave. The setting is lovely, and Il Bastione often sits above a beautiful morning mist. We loved the pool overlooking the deep valley and the farms below.

We loved our eight nights here in October 2024, and it's one of the few places in Italy we'd gladly come back to. Our room was in Le Scuderie, just above the pool. One of us even swam every day. The water was fresh, but I liked it as a cold-water nature enthusiast. Breakfast was great. It was mainly traditional sweet food, with meat, cheese, and eggs available if you asked. That felt like a thoughtful, accommodating touch. Dinner was lovely and good value. There were quite a few courses, but the meal wasn't rushed, and you could skip the bread or just have a little. The owners and staff were all kind and accommodating. Spello is charming, about a 3 km walk away. We walked there and back every day, and loved the views, wildflowers, and scents of wild herbs. We also met some lovely people, and a few became friends. We highly recommend Il Bastione!
