B&B Dietro Piazza Maggiore

Ms. Linda was very kind and helpful, and the place is only steps from the historic center. The rooms, though, could use some updating.

Motorcyclists can leave their bikes right beneath the room's balcony. The rooms are comfortable and charming, on a quiet street away from the noise, and the B&B is just steps from the center of Sulmona. The lady who runs it is wonderfully kind and courteous, and happy to accommodate requests.

The room I was offered was cold and still being prepared. It had an old, extremely uncomfortable single bed and an unpleasant smell. I had first contacted Mrs. Linda to ask about a room with a view at another B&B not far from the city center. When she found out I was traveling alone, she suggested a different option at her home, which I declined, then this "B&B." Looking back at her oddly kind manner, I have to admit she was very clever in getting me to rent the room, and she didn't even give me a receipt. The conditions were truly unacceptable. In one conversation she also made it clear she didn't think much of Neapolitans. People working in hospitality shouldn't have those prejudices, especially alongside behavior that was completely improper and, above all, unethical. My experience was anything but pleasant.

The room at BB Dietro Piazza Maggiore is spacious, with a comfortable bed and a new bathroom. The pipe sticking out near the bidet is a questionable choice, since it's easy to bang your leg on it. This seems like a reasonable place for a night or two in Sulmona, but no more than that. I told the owner when I'd arrive and still waited about half an hour for the keys, which was a hassle. The "included breakfast" is just a voucher for pasta and cappuccino at a local café, so it's not much. Prices are average, though not low.
