The room was good value, quiet, and had a nice view from the top. The host was attentive when the air conditioning remote stopped working. She was going to come over, but I took the batteries out and put them back in, which solved it. They also cleaned the room, which was nice and unexpected. Getting up the stairs took me thirteen minutes, and I’m a runner. With luggage, it would be difficult, and you’d probably need a taxi from the bottom.

We stayed for three nights and felt welcome throughout. Our host was an old but lively Italian, a real Italian, and he was delighted to talk with us about everything in Italian. He also pointed out the main sights in the area and persuaded me to try Vino alla Mandorla in Castelmola. That was a good call, it’s really interesting. We walked to Taormina after Google Maps estimated 25 minutes, but it didn’t mention the 600 steps on the Via della Crocifisso by the church at the top of the mountain. We hadn’t found any useful information about the bus that goes there until our host told us. If you go, ask for the room with the big balcony. The view over Messina and mainland Italy, Castelmola, and Etna is great, especially at night with a glass of wine. The photos are from the balcony.

The location is challenging, but our host was great and the room very comfortable. We had glorious views of Taormina and Mt Etna, plus a generous continental breakfast.
