Terrible experience. I booked at the last minute and drove seven hours through a severe storm. When I got to the hotel at 22:45, it was closed. I was stranded at night in a country I didn’t know, with nowhere to sleep. Since I’d booked through an app, I could only contact them by email or message there. I later saw one message from the owner, sent at 21:10, saying the latest check-in was 22:00. As the driver in that storm, I hadn’t had a chance to check. I had to find another hotel, and asked politely for a refund so I could pay for somewhere that would let me check in late instead of sleeping on the street. He replied in capital letters, yelling that I should have told him I was delayed, that he’d waited until 22:00, and that he’d tried to reach me all day on WhatsApp and through the booking app. There was nothing before the one message at 21:10. Had I missed some phantom messages? He also said I couldn’t act as if nothing had happened at check-in, and told me not to make fun of him. We weren’t playing around. He said he’d waited until 10 pm WITHOUT ANSWER, then gone home to sleep because they get up at 6 in the morning to work. Are we allowed? I don’t know who’s working or who’s supposed to do what. I’m expected to pay and get nothing, then sleep outside because he doesn’t want to work and needs to wake up at 6am? What about me, in a foreign country at night during a severe storm, with no bed after paying? I was risking my life and my money. It felt like he was trying to make easy money. Condescending and unprofessional, and he kept harassing me after taking my money for nothing and leaving me outside in the storm. Inhumane. He must have slept well.

This is a great base for getting to know Tirano, which you should do. The room and bathroom were both really spacious. My only possible downside was the bathroom window curtain: it was quite light and see-through, so I felt people on the street might be able to look in. The location is right among everything. Go two blocks west for the train station, one block east for the “posh area” with stores and restaurants, or one block south past the river to reach the old town.

The rooms are good value, especially if you’re taking the Bernina Express. The host communicated really well and was there to welcome us.

The host was pleasant and helpful, and we were comfortable. It was easy to reach, with very convenient access to the Bernina Express. Just remember to shut the windows or bugs can get in. It’s not a 5 star hotel, but it doesn’t need to be.
