Hotel Virgilio

The staff were helpful and courteous, and the location is very good. That’s about all I can say in its favor. The place badly needs updating: our bathroom was tiny and old, the bed felt like a block of cement, and the sheets and towels were stiff as cardboard. The main room light seemed to be about a 20-watt bulb. We also had to haul our luggage up a flight of stairs to reach the elevator. Breakfast was European-style, nothing special.

The attached restaurant was absolutely fantastic, and the location made it easy to get everywhere. The air conditioning was great, much needed last August. The hotel also had a nice, quiet atmosphere just off the busy road, so it wasn’t loud at night even with people still out and about. After a long day in the sun, it was nice to have access to a van to get to the beach. The only real trouble was the toilet: it kept flushing without stopping and sounded as though it might fall through the floor.

I’m giving the extra star because the hotel staff were so courteous and kind, thank you! Most of my stay felt like a four-star experience, or a little less. The location was okay, near the center and railway station, though there weren’t nice views around. Furniture was old but clean, the beds were comfortable but the pillows weren’t, and street noise was noticeable enough that we needed earplugs. Breakfast was okay too.

The ocean view is spectacular, with Stromboli island volcano in sight. Beach towels and umbrellas are supplied, and the staff are kind and very helpful. I’m going back again. Excellent 👌
