Portercole

The location is hard to beat, right at the top of the town’s walking boulevard and close to the road leading down to it. We could park fairly nearby, then step straight into the busy center with all its shops. I stayed an extra night because I enjoyed the place and its location so much. One thing to keep in mind: there are stairs everywhere, so this wouldn’t suit someone with health or mobility issues. The hosts were incredibly gracious and kind. I’ve traveled a lot and can’t remember being looked after so thoughtfully. They answered every question with real enthusiasm, and the whole place was spotless. The rooms were cleaned promptly and thoroughly. There’s a subtle, pleasant clean smell when you first enter, both in the facility and the room. I usually dislike odors, but this one was nice, and it fades quickly with an open window. They’ve thought through lots of small details, including several lighting options and a bathroom plug converter that lets you switch to 110v for appliances. Breakfast was good, with sweet and savory choices, and one of the owners served it personally. The dining room was pleasant, and the art and decor made it feel more like a high class home than a hotel.
