The apartment’s position is hard to beat, within walking distance of the lake and restaurants, and near bike rental. The local team was friendly and organized, and got us everything we asked for. The layout under the villa’s sloping roof was a real problem for anyone over 1m tall. We could manage in the kitchen and living room, and got used to the bedroom, but the bathroom was another story. The listing said there was a bathtub with a shower head, yet anyone over 1m couldn’t stand up to shower. It meant taking a bath or trying to wash while kneeling, which really affected our active vacation. Parking was also inconvenient. It’s quite far away, and because of the one-way street, you pass the apartment about 50m after leaving the ferry but have to drive a multi-kilometer detour to return from the other direction for loading or unloading. That should be explained in the listing. We stayed at Varenna Garden from Aug 22 to Aug 29 this year, booked through @Marriott. Three stars feels generous, and I’ll ask @Marriott to remove it from their list, since I expect better quality from them.

The place was clean and had the basics for a few days, and the location near the lake, restaurants, and ferry was great. But showering was a problem. There was no hot water the first night, and the agency took a long time to reply, so I heated water in a boiler. They came in the morning, but it still wasn’t warm enough. There were no bedroom curtains either, so on the second night we hung up a blanket to block some light, which helped quite a bit.

Varenna feels peaceful and scenic, and it also makes a handy base for nearby places like Bellagio and Bellano. The village sits on Lake Como’s eastern shore in Lombardy, with mountain views, narrow streets, and a colorful waterfront lined with cafes and gelaterias. It’s lovely for a relaxed walk. Villa Monastero is one of the best-known sights, with gardens overlooking the water and a botanical collection from around the world. There’s also Castello di Vezio, a medieval castle on the hill above the village.

Watch your head because the ceilings are low. The location is fantastic, though, and the AC was a lifesaver. The garden patio is a great spot to sip wine and watch the ferries.
