Really good experience, and both the host and the place were great.

The host, Alejandro, welcomed us, showed us around, and explained everything carefully. The room was bright and roomy, with a large bed and a bunk bed, so four people could sleep there. The bathroom could use towel hooks and a shelf for soap in the shower. Maybe there hadn't been time to add them after the recent renovation. The kitchen and hallway are shared with another room. I liked being able to chat with the neighbors, though the kitchen could use a pasta pot. It does have a coffee machine with pods and a large fridge. Walking from the station in the evening takes about 20 minutes, and we saw Turks, Indians, and black people hanging out along the way. They weren't aggressive. Mestre is about 2.5-3 times cheaper than Venice, and a travel card makes the trip there easy, about 15 minutes by bus 4L or 53E. My one complaint is that we were charged 10 days before arrival.
