The kitchen was missing basic cooking items, including pot lids, a ladle, strainer, skimmer, milk boiler, and juicer. Lighting was also poor during our stay because a bulb was faulty, though it was repaired while we were there. The 45-square-meter Lo Scalino studio is charming and right in central Verona, but the living area was cold during the end-of-year freeze. The living room air conditioner was broken and couldn’t be switched on even after maintenance came. A technician offered an electric heater, but we couldn’t use the radiator because of a voltage overload. There was also a 20-cm hole in the living room window for ventilation from the internal boiler, letting in cold air when it was about minus three degrees outside. There’s a room downstairs with music and noise late at night, so you shouldn’t expect much quiet before at least 2 a.m.

The landlady was the biggest issue for me. I privately criticized one of her Verona tips, and she then publicly pilloried me in a way that left me no chance to respond. That’s how my positive review elsewhere came about, probably like many others. She later got “confused” and said that was exactly why people stop giving tips. It felt like dealing with a petulant teenager. The apartment itself was okay, though there weren’t proper curtains and the early sun woke me up. If you enjoy Italian drama, this might suit you. If you need reliable accommodation, maybe not. I’d never had an experience like it.
