This wasn’t the romantic, beautiful B&B in Verona we’d hoped for on our honeymoon. We left and booked another hotel for our first night because the room was unbearable. The bed had an extremely uncomfortable futon mattress. The loft is quite short if you’re over 5 foot tall, and the staircase is unusual and potentially treacherous. The walls are thin enough that we could hear our neighbors’ conversations word for word. Communication with the owner was relentless and passive-aggressive, with more than 15 messages starting almost a week before our stay. She demanded our exact arrival time and threatened to cancel when we gave a window of a couple of hours, despite the listing saying check-in was 2-7pm. She also asked us to send pictures of our passports over Whatsapp. She wanted us to jump through multiple hoops and answer messages immediately before we’d even arrived. That was the most taxing part of our trip, and unwelcome while traveling. If you value flexibility and security for your personal identification, I wouldn’t recommend this property. Breakfast is an extra 30 euro for 2 people per day, so I wouldn’t call this a “bed and breakfast.”

Self check-in details came by whatsapp, communication was good, and the host gave us dinner suggestions and helped with a booking. It’s a nice B&B, conveniently located not too far from the train station or the downtown sights and plazas. Breakfast in the courtyard was pretty and good, though not as impressive as at other places we visited in Italy. The cappuccino was good, and there were several choices like yogurt, cold cuts, hard-boiled eggs, and pastry. There weren’t the same sorts of options you’d get at a cafe or bakery, such as fresh croissants.

I realize this place has good ratings, so maybe I just had exceptionally bad luck. A problem came up with my credit card, which had been replaced several weeks after I booked through priceline.com. It was a simple mistake, but the owner accused me of giving her a fraudulent number and filed a police report within two hours of messaging me about it. I didn’t see the message until later that day because we were in the mountains in the dolomites. She also sent threatening messages to my friend, who had nothing to do with the bill. Now I have to dispute the charges on my card. The whole situation was an unnecessary minor nightmare, and the owner came across as unreasonable to the point of being insane. The room was clean and breakfast was adequate. The sofa in my room was broken, though. When I told staff, she said, “I know the last guest broke it.” There were blankets covering it, and when I sat down it nearly collapsed to the floor. The bed had a substandard futon mattress, and I had to stack pillows to make it bearable.

We stayed in the beautiful Giulietta e Romeo room, with a super nice and attentive manager. It’s very close to both the city center and the train station. If we return to Verona, we’ll definitely book this B&B again.

The host’s attitude was laughable. After several phone calls, the host sent a message with the door code. Her first words were, “I will not give you the breakfast,” even though it was included with the room. She insisted this was because we had put the pizza box on the table. It made no sense.
