Hotel Verdi

The only good thing I can say is that the housekeeper was polite and respectful, and the room was fairly clean. Everything else was a mess. I booked for five people, four adults and one child aged 13, but the room only had three beds, one double and two singles, despite the website promising five. There weren’t enough towels either, just three large ones and two small ones by the sink. At reception, a woman offered a €20 discount if three of us shared the double bed meant for two. After we said that wasn’t an option because there wasn’t enough space, she promised another bed in 30 minutes. We waited an hour. It was already nighttime, and after travelling all day since 4am, we wanted to get food but couldn’t because of the wait. The sink wouldn’t drain from the first use, the hairdryer didn’t work, and the bathroom extractor fan was broken. SKY TV was promised on the website and listed in the room, but there was none. The kitchen had no equipment, not even a kettle for tea. The website photos were misleading, and the bed frames were scratched and looked used. Breakfast wasn’t available if it was overbooked. The location was horrible, near bars and pubs with lots of shouting at night. Wi-Fi was promised everywhere, but it disconnected as soon as we entered the room, which was a major problem since we had no roaming abroad. This hotel is a disgrace.

The beds were okay, and breakfast was the best part overall. The food was fresh and the pastries were good, though the hotdogs, which looked and tasted American, seemed out of place. Wi-Fi was intermittent, connecting slowly before dropping out. We were part of a large group and had dinner at the hotel. The food was okay, but it came in small courses and took a long time to arrive. The rooms had worn paint and furnishings, and the street was noisy at night. The corridors were completely dark at night, with motion lights that took a while to come on.

One big disaster. The staff tried their best, but there wasn’t much they could do. Reception only operated in the afternoon, with nobody there at night or in the morning. The rooms were very basic, with bare cables sticking out of the walls and balcony railings that were unscrewed. The “5-person apartment” was just one room with several beds, like a cheap hostel. The furniture was scratched up, as if it had come from a garbage dump, and the Wi-Fi barely worked, only in the corridor. When we got back from our trip in the evening, the corridor and part of our room were flooded. It took the reception ladies over an hour to make the room usable by spreading towels all over the floor. The cleaning service didn’t show up until morning, and nobody offered to move us to a dry room. There were no keys for the bathroom locks, including the one in the hall. The hot breakfast was just scrambled eggs and sausages with ketchup, with no mustard or vegetables.
