The house has lovely character, with wood inside and stone walls, and the owner was kind and always helpful. It can get pretty hot in the afternoon because it faces south, though in summer it makes a handy base for exploring the cooler valleys nearby.

At night the darkness is so complete that you can really see the stars, and the view from here is stunning by day. It’s a tiny hamlet above Villeneuve, just a few houses, some of which look like they’ve been empty for a long time.

We stayed in the downstairs apartment, which has a double bed in the bedroom and two sofa beds in the living room, so six people can sleep there comfortably. The stairs down are awkward and really need fixing. The place is in an isolated old village that’s being renovated, and getting there means taking a narrow, winding road.

It’s set right in the middle of nature, which made the stay fantastic.
