For breakfast, I would have liked a little more variety. Aside from that, it was a very comfortable stay. It's a classic Japanese-style Ryokan, but with a western room option if you don't want tatami. The rooms were huge and spotless, and the whole hotel was spotless too. I liked the outdoor bath on the 10th floor best. There were free drinks in the lounge, including some alcoholic ones, until 10pm. Signs, menus, and other details were available in English.

The room was spacious enough for all four of us, and the food and service had no faults. The dinner buffet was amazing, as was breakfast, though I would have liked some sushi. Both onsens have great views, with the 10th-floor one being better. We had to walk a little to get here, but it wasn't too bad. Sunset is around 5pm, and apparently the 10th-floor onsen has a great view then. Try to make it in time, we missed it :(

This place is a book lover's and onsen lover's dream. There are two library nooks with plenty of seating, warm and quiet, plus a free coffee and tea spot where you can curl up with a herbal tea and a book. The ryokan is over 100 years old, charming, and the Japanese hospitality was lovely, less snobbish than Shousuke No Yado Takinoyu, where we stayed the night before. I liked the level 2 onsen best for its cozy feel, though both were wonderful, warmer and cleaner than Shosuke. The level 10 bath had a great night view. Our room, 616, was as spacious as the previous ryokan's but better designed, with lots of space for shoes and bags. The futons and pillows were the most comfortable we had in Japan, and we stayed warm all night in midwinter. The heated air con didn't dry us out. Kaiseki dinner and breakfast were five-star, with generous portions and lots to choose from. The dinner surpassed our earlier ryokan meals, with Fukushima beef, one-day miso-marinated fish, seasonal dishes, seven entrees and three desserts. Breakfast had more options than Shousuke, including Western pastries. I'd come back in a heartbeat. Love!!!

The hot spring water left my skin so smooth and silky, I loved it! The rooftop open-air bath on the 10th floor had a fantastic view, and the breakfast was all-you-can-eat. The cozy library had free drinks and sake too. All soooooo good!!

The buffet meals were fresh and tasty, and the public onsen with rotenburo was charming. During my year living in Japan, this was the best ryokan I visited. The view over the whole Higashiyama Onsen area and Aizu town was absolutely adorable.
