The river view from our cute room was lovely, and listening to the water at night made it peaceful. The food was a highlight: a delicious traditional dinner with lots of different dishes, then a hot, tasty breakfast. The staff made up our bed while we ate dinner and took it down again during breakfast. There was also tea and a treat waiting in the room when we arrived at 5pm, after a quick, easy check-in. We had time to unwind and warm up in the clean, hot bath after the journey. It was snowing when we left, so our host kindly drove us to the bus stop to make sure we'd get there in time. The stay was a great value, and we'd choose this place again if we return to the area.

We slept on futons, with the quiet sound of the river outside, after relaxing in the hotel's warm onsen. An extra mat under the futon is a good idea. Dinner and breakfast were wonderful Japanese-style meals, and the hostess even sang us a song about the Sandankyo Gorge as a special gift. The hospitality made for a memorable, authentic Japanese night. We certainly didn't regret staying here.

The Japanese-style hotel is in a beautiful spot. I wish I'd stayed longer to explore the mountain passage behind it. Bring swimwear, as there are lovely little spots where you can swim.
