It’s fairly affordable for an onsen near the city, and with few other options around, it’s a reasonable choice. Dinner was a little disappointing, though, and I didn’t get much explanation about the meal. The onsen itself didn’t impress me much either.

I slept incredibly well here, probably better than at 90% of the ryokans and hotels I’ve stayed in around Japan. The room was dark and quiet, with a double-stacked mattress and a layered pillow. I liked it enough to want to find the pillow brand in Tokyo and take one home. The food was excellent too. Booking through the hotel website lets you add wagyu or fugu. At breakfast, the dining area looks out over a garden, and the Japanese curry was among the best I’ve had, especially impressive for a hotel buffet rather than a curry house. The onsen also faces a garden, with warm and cold indoor baths and a hotter outdoor one.

The food was fresh and delicious. I went on a weekday, when it was quiet, with only two or three people in the onsen at a time. That made the visit really peaceful and enjoyable.

I came just to use the onsen, and it was great. The baths and facilities were really nice. You can rent towels, and the ticket machine makes it easy to get everything you need.

A lovely onsen hotel in Akita, with beautiful baths and excellent service. They welcome foreign guests with English instructions, and there’s free Wi-Fi. It’s about a 10-minute taxi ride from Akita train station, costing around 2,000 yen.
