Tokyo Ueno New Izu Hotel

The Rakusan room was basic, but it suited us perfectly. The staff were wonderful and really made an effort to make us feel welcome. I also loved the quiet location, just a few blocks from Ueno’s shopping streets and train station. I’ll be back.

We had a tatami room with space for three futons side by side, plus tea and yukata were provided. The toilet and bathing area were separate. Staff were so nice they recognized us on sight. The hotel is near Ueno Station, Ueno Park, Ameyoko Street, and downtown Ueno.

The neighborhood was quiet despite having lots of small restaurants, and the location near Ueno Station was great. Our room was tiny, though it had everything we needed. The bed was the real problem: it was sold as a double but felt barely bigger than a single, and we struggled not to fall out when turning over. For one night it might have been fine, but we booked four. We’ve stayed in similar Tokyo hotels six times, and because of that bed size, we’d avoid this one next time.

The rooms were neat and clean, with comfortable beds and decent ventilation. What stood out was the hospitality: the staff were helpful, everyone spoke good English, and check-in was easy. They also helped me with things in Ueno and booked local restaurants for me. The good price made the stay even better.
