The Gran Resort Akou

The drive in at night was a little unnerving. The road to the hotel is narrow and unlit, and having navigation on didn't make it feel much easier. I booked the no-meals plan on the day of my stay. The room looked newly renovated and was clean. In the morning, I opened the curtains and was greeted by a beautiful view across the Seto Inland Sea.

We arrived late, but the staff were still polite and accommodating. The room was clean, and the single air conditioner by the window worked well. Just keep in mind there's no open-air bath, and the bath is in the same place in the morning and at night. The parking entrance can be a little difficult to spot after dark.

Our child had fun playing in the sea, and the price was reasonable, so we were happy with the stay. Before check-in, while we were at the beach in front of the hotel, a staff member kindly offered to look after our luggage. We booked a room only, so I can't comment on the food. I liked that there were handled plastic bags by the yukata that guests could take. Baby soap was available in the bathroom too. The bath water felt a little hot.

The hotel is well placed for a day or two out, with stylish cafes, shrines, and Kirakirazaka Seaside Park nearby. We stayed as a family, and both couples and families seem like a good fit. There are no room baths, and the open-air bath is a simple hot-spring-style one, open from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM and from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Charcoal shampoo and body soap were provided. I came back with wet hair and found there was no dryer in the room, which was inconvenient, so bring one. There is a dryer in the changing area by the open-air bath. The Wi-Fi was handy, though there aren't many outlets, so I'd take an extension cord next time. The hotel's private beach is pebbly rather than sandy, which might be easier on your feet, but there's no shade, so bringing some could help. There's no receptionist late at night or early in the morning, so it's best to mention any needs early. Our room was Japanese-style with futons, and from the window we could see the ocean and the cafe next door. The kids had fun playing games and chatting in the window seats, and my two elementary school-aged children especially liked lounging on the futons. I was a little wary after reading some negative reviews, but the staff came across as friendly and courteous, not unhelpful. Maybe management and staff have been making improvements. The room had no screens, though, and adding them would let us enjoy the breeze without worrying about mosquitoes. Thank you.
