The place was terrible and lacked cleanliness. Cockroaches appeared during both breakfast and dinner, so we had to stop eating and couldn't finish even half the meals. When we told the staff, they didn't remove the cockroaches, they chased them away with a fly swatter instead. We were still charged the full price. I don't think this is acceptable, even if the place is cheap.

The other guests were really noisy, leaving their door open so we could hear their conversations, while children ran down the hall without anyone telling them to stop. I wish the staff had said something. After getting home, I noticed the receipt charged one extra person for the bathing tax. I should have checked it at the time, but I'd advise other guests to look carefully. The staff were friendly, and the food was delicious. Dinner was filling enough that I couldn't finish the sashimi, so they served it marinated at breakfast. Breakfast had lots of small side dishes, not a buffet.

I usually don't leave negative reviews, but I don't want other people to have a bad hot spring trip after being taken in by the high online ratings. The place lacked cleanliness throughout, and the baths felt unsanitary, not fit to offer to guests. I left early and went to a nearby public bath. I also don't understand the high food ratings. The sashimi and fish soup were tasty, likely because there are a couple of fish shops with live tanks in the hot spring town, but the menu didn't seem planned with diners in mind. There was far too much food, and even as a fish lover I got tired of it halfway through. We arrived on time, but the grilled and fried fish at dinner were cold. Shimoda Onsen has several popular hot spring inns. If they're full or outside your budget, I'd recommend staying elsewhere in Amakusa.

The room and bathroom had a nice old-fashioned feel, and the space was relaxing. I went during the Ise Lobster Festival, excited for the lobster, and the dinner was finally served. Everything was exquisite, and the luxurious seafood meal went beyond what I'd expected. It felt like being on a luxury cruise ship!
