The young woman on staff was so upbeat and clearly put a lot of care into looking after guests. I never caught her name, but I really appreciated it. The hospitality and kaisekke made up for the onsen being smaller and more modest than those at an upscale property. Dinner was fantastic, especially the whole baked fish and some of the best sashimi I’ve ever eaten. This was one of four ryokan stays on our Japan trip, and it was a highlight. The property is right by the two rocks formation and Kumomi Sengen shrine, about a five-minute walk away. On departure day I got up early, hiked the 30 minutes to the shrine, enjoyed the “land of the rising sun” meaning, then made it back for one last onsen bath before breakfast. Bring cash. We were surprised they didn’t take cards, and the nearest ATM is 20 minutes away. I hope I can return.
