Ms. Tomoko made us feel so welcome and was wonderfully kind, always looking out for how we were doing. After days of exploring and traveling, having our own hot spring bath was such a treat. We stayed in the Akebono Suite, where the modern design and Japanese touches come together beautifully. The materials and little details feel carefully chosen, too. Shubuko Shingetsu gave us memories we won't forget. A real hidden gem, and one we'd happily recommend.

What stayed with me most was how personal everything felt. Arita Shukubo Shingetsu has just three villas, and the owners bring so much warmth to the experience. The husband collects Japanese ceramic antiques, and Tomoko San was thoughtful and attentive, speaking with guests in fluent, charming English. Their son, the chef, made both the kaiseki dinner and breakfast memorable, with beautifully prepared dishes full of flavour. I loved having a private garden that felt like a quiet little world, joined to the room and its natural surroundings. The villa design is modern Japanese, with details that feel carefully considered. Comfort is unusual here, too: quiet metal panels provide warmth or cooling instead of a noisy conventional air conditioner, so there were no drafts, dust, or noise to disturb the calm. The onsen water comes directly from the earth's core and made for a pure, rejuvenating bath. This is much more than a place to sleep. It brings together art, innovation, refined Japanese culture, and genuine family-run hospitality. I left with an experience I'll cherish and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique, soul-nourishing escape in Kyushu.

The room was beautifully built, and had all the conveniences I needed to stay comfortable while traveling.

We came to Arita as potters from the US, hoping to find a place with a private onsen, and ended up wishing we'd booked more than two nights in Akebono. The peaceful, almost magical grounds made this a trip we'll remember for a long time. The rooms have antique pottery, and there's also a lovely collection in the antique shop onsite. Thoughtful design and attention to detail show throughout, while the amenities were high quality and the fridge was stocked with drinks, with snacks left for us as well. I'd recommend including dinner when you book. The Kaiseki courses were delicious, served on Arita ware, and the meal felt like a private dining experience. Most of all, the owner and staff made us feel at home on our first trip to Arita and Kyushu. A big thank you to Tomoko-San and Seina-San in particular. They gave us great recommendations, helped us get around town, and even arranged ceramics experiences and meal reservations. We had such a good time staying at Shukubo Shingetsu, and we'll certainly be back.

I was uncomfortable throughout my stay, especially given that this wasn't a cheap hotel. On the first night, people who seemed to be guests or restaurant patrons were making a lot of noise in the garden late at night. Staff didn't step in, and I couldn't reach the front desk by phone. The second night was frustrating in a different way. I had a dinner reservation at the restaurant onsite, but they rang my doorbell ten minutes before the booking and hurried me along, saying dinner was ready. I rushed to get ready and sat down, only to find there were no appetizers or menus on the table. Their approach to service felt completely off.
