I liked the hotel’s emblem and name, so I asked our travel agent to find us a Smile Hotel. Kita-asaka fit our budget, and we booked it. I’d worried about being far from Tokyo, but the station is only a four minute walk away, and getting to all the different wards was easy. Restaurants are just a couple of minutes on foot, with plenty of grocery stores and convenience stores nearby, including Lawson's and 7-Eleven. Our room wasn’t huge, but it was very comfortable. We could open the window for a breeze, and there was a newer AC/Heating unit we could control. The bathroom was raised, as seems common in Japan, with strong water pressure and a deep tub. The staff were professional, sweet, and treated us so well throughout the stay. Someone was always at the desk, 24/7. There’s also a restaurant called Jonathans downstairs. It was peaceful for breakfast, with symphony music and lots of Japanese and America inspired dishes. Thanks for making our trip wonderful!

Read the fine print carefully if you book through Agoda or another discount site. To qualify for Agoda’s discounted rate, you have to bring proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test result at check-in. I’d stayed here about 10 times before without that proof and even had a member's card, but they wouldn’t waive the requirement. I ended up paying double to stay.

Good value for the price. I was cycling to a campsite nearby, but got there too late to check in, so I stayed here instead. The staff were considerate, and the room was clean and functional, though rather small.

The customer service was awful. Even with an emergency and a valid reason, they refused to refund the booking. The company came across as cold and misleading. I wouldn’t trust the positive reviews.
