The meals were a real highlight. Breakfast and dinner are included, and the seasonal cooking is high quality. The restaurant is listed in the Michelin Guide. There are just two rooms, each for 2-5 people, with a roomy, clean traditional Japanese interior. Greenery surrounds the place in every direction, so it feels very private. The staff were warm, and one younger woman spoke fluent English.

At 130,000 yen, we expected a much better stay. The room smelled strongly of damp and mold, possibly because of the nearby stream and poor ventilation. Some fittings also felt unsafe, with nails sticking out of furniture, a splintered wooden tub, and frayed electrical cords. Meals were below average and service was sparse. The entrance was hard to spot, and we got no directions before check-in. One staff member spoke some English, which was okay, but there was no English guide in the room. There are lots of good onsen places nearby, so I’d suggest trying somewhere else.

A lovely, secluded place run with care by a family. We got to and from Fukuokua easily by local bus, though you have to be willing to walk.

The in-room bath is a lovely tub filled with hot water, but it isn't an onsen, so keep that in mind. If the price works for you, this is a great place to stay, with good food and really nice staff.
