Tsuruya

We had no issues at all. The service was good, and one staff member speaks English. Check-in and check-out were both great, and the breakfast was delicious. Our room was spacious and luxurious, and the private in-room onsen was relaxing. The hotel is right in the heart of Aso, within walking distance of everything, and has free parking.

I went with family in the middle of March and we booked four different room types. Every room was really nice and clean, and I liked that each one had an onsen and bathtub. The staff were very nice and provided good service. We’ll visit again in the future.

Be sure to book the set dinner if you stay at Tsuruya. The Japanese breakfast was wonderful too, and eating it in the yukata provided in the room made for such a lovely experience. Our room was spacious, tidy, clean, and well furnished. The balcony’s private onsen was a treat. The ryokan building has loads of charm and character, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming, especially the women serving breakfast and dinner. We’d highly recommend staying here.

The meals were delicious, and you can also have your evening meal in the cozy bar/lounge, which has lovely acoustics. It isn’t operating as a bar right now, but I hope it reopens as one someday. The staff were courteous, attentive, and helpful. The matron was particularly kind and can speak a little English to help if your Japanese isn’t up to par. This is a 5/5 for me, with no memorable complaints. The price reflects the quality of the experience. The rooms are very clean, with great updated amenities. In the large suite, the private sauna and outdoor deck baths were wonderful, and there was a comfortable outdoor lounge too. It’s one of the few hotel or inn options within walking distance of the cultural street and the beautifully restored Aso Shrine. Walking along Monzenmachi in a yukata was a fulfilling experience. If you’re after a high-quality traditional ryokan near the shrine, this is a great choice.
