Atami Japan Onsen House

It was dusty-smelling and generally unclean, which made the stay unpleasant. I wouldn't recommend it.

The rooftop onsen was great, with an amazing city view, though it can be seen from nearby buildings. If you're worried about privacy, there's an indoor hot spring bath, or bring a swimsuit for the rooftop. The bookshelves are packed, including a good manga selection. We also forgot something, and they kindly sent it to us cash on delivery, which helped a lot. We were five people, and the stairs were a bit of a workout. The entrance and hallway are extremely narrow, so big suitcases are a bad idea. It's an unusual Japanese-Western space, and apparently much of the place was handmade by the owner. Anyone into distinctive architecture or interiors would probably enjoy it. We had a wonderful time, but one night felt too short. I'd recommend it for groups of around 4-8 who don't mind the stairs. Just avoid bringing large luggage, since the narrow entry and steep steps make it a real challenge.

The house rules say the open-air bath and BBQ area can be used until 9 PM, but we were reported to the neighbors for noise at around 8 PM. The hot springs and hot water stop by 9, so with check-in at 4 PM and checkout at 10 AM, everyone has only five hours to finish BBQ and bathing. Guests are also expected to wash dishes, sort the trash, and take it out, which cuts into the time to enjoy the place. The basement karaoke costs surprisingly much extra. Soundproofing is poor, and karaoke can be heard all the way up to the fourth floor, so it’s hard to use late without disturbing people who want to sleep. For all those reasons, I don't think it's good value for money. It seems better suited to small groups than large ones, even though the facility itself is good for groups.

There were rental game consoles, manga, Amazon Prime, and other things to use in the basement. One night wasn't enough to enjoy it all. With plenty of bathrooms and toilets, it was comfortable even with a large group.
