The premium guest room really stands out by Japanese onsen hotel standards. It’s spacious, with both a tatami room and a Western-style room. The regular room here also felt better than the regular guest room at Kamenoi Hotel Amami Annex, which is rated as a 4-star onsen hotel. I found the buffet breakfast and kaiseki dinner okay, around 3.5 stars. Atami Station pickup and drop-off is complimentary, with three shuttle vans serving the hotel. The indoor communal baths need attention. Their chloride-spring water is fine, but the baths look aged and should be resurfaced. There’s a slightly unpleasant smell in one corner, and more ventilation would help. The granite walls are worn, some aluminum handrails are rusty, and the two elevators’ doors close so quickly they keep hitting the second or third person entering. I’d rate the hotel four stars if those bath issues were upgraded and the odor fixed. I visited on 5/6/2025. In Atami, almost all onsen are chloride springs; across Japan, only 23% are sulfate springs, which can benefit skin conditions and high blood pressure, according to Dr. Uchida’s lecture on the medical effects of hot springs.

The hotel is an easy walk from the beach, and having a convenience store attached came in handy when we needed more drinks. We stayed one night on our Japan tour and really enjoyed the food, service, and surroundings. Sleeping on the floor took some getting used to, and I can’t say the pillow was comfortable. Still, wearing the robes and slippers to dinner was a laugh, and we had a great time chatting with other guests in the lobby.

We spent two nights at this quiet onsen hotel, which has loads of retro charm. The rooms are very spacious by local standards, and both dinner and breakfast were decent with really generous portions. The onsen was alright, though not very hot. The place has clearly seen better days and looks run down. The cow in the dining hall guards great treasure.

I slept really comfortably on the tatami mats with the cushions and blankets, and the provided kimono robes were comfortable to wear too. The balcony view was beautiful, and the artificial grass was a nice touch. There was also a fun Karaoke Bar, and the food there was great.

The rooms have traditional futons and were comfortable, and the food was really good. This is a very nice hotel in a cute little town, right by the ocean with stellar views. The onsen are nice too. When the outdoor bath is on your gender’s side, you get an amazing view, and it’s so relaxing and beautiful.
