Umito Voyage Atami

The food was delicious, and the hotel felt well balanced overall. It’s well kept, with friendly staff and a cozy, relaxing interior. From the cliffside balcony you can see the sea in a full 180-degree view and hear the waves. At night, for the season, it was lovely to see the moonlit path stretch out from the rooftop. It’s undergoing renovations in 2026, and I’d like to return after it reopens.

The worst customer service. They made a reservation mistake and offered only a hollow apology, with no effort to fix it or make things right sincerely. I’m furious that they showed no regard for the time I spent choosing and booking accommodation. At least I’m glad I didn’t have to stay somewhere that acts like this.

The staff were very courteous, and I appreciated small touches like being told the sunrise time at check-in. My ocean-view room at UMITO VOYAGE ATAMI in Atami was spacious, with a kitchen and washing machine, so it would work well for a longer stay. The sunrise was especially moving, and the place had a quiet, peaceful feel that made it easy to relax. Dinner was a full course featuring local ingredients. The spiny lobster and Ashitaka beef were especially delicious. Breakfast was satisfying too, with fresh salad and freshly baked bread. I’d like to come back if I get the chance.

■ June 2024, Ocean View Suite, the cheapest room. The food, service, and views were all excellent. ■ The food seems to have been revamped recently, with dishes from well-known chefs. Both the French dinner and breakfast used fresh local ingredients. Every sauce and dressing seemed carefully made, and the cooking was spot on. It was so good that I think this restaurant could earn a Michelin star if it opened in Tokyo. ■ The view was all sea, with nothing blocking it, from both the room and the restaurant. I’ve stayed at luxury hotels in Capri and Miyakojima, and I never expected to find views that topped theirs just an hour from Tokyo. It’s amazing to get this kind of resort atmosphere without spending much time or money on transport. ■ You can hear the waves while lying in your room, soaking in the hot spring, or dining. It’s incredibly relaxing. There aren’t many guests, so it feels private and is really quiet. All you hear are the waves and birds. A small luxury hotel, truly. ■ The service staff also seem to have been refreshed recently. Everyone was helpful, casual and friendly in a good way. They handled even little requests quickly and with a smile. ■ It’s a bit expensive, but that kind of French meal in Tokyo would cost 40,000-50,000 yen per person. Even a suite at a mediocre hotel in Atami would be 50,000-100,000 yen for the room alone. For me, the cheapest room at UMITO is the better deal and more satisfying. I’d really recommend it for an anniversary or a treat for yourself ^_^
