Pension Todoroki

After a tough ride to Atami via Motohakone while cycling through the Izu Peninsula, we arrived tired and hungry. The hill really is no joke, though it does explain the lovely views. The hosts had patiently waited so we could have a late dinner, and the meal was delicious and gave us our energy back. The bath afterward was just what we needed before another day on the bikes. Our room suited us perfectly, and the food was among the best we had in Japan: fresh fish, pan-seared meat, and all kinds of local specialties. We don't speak Japanese, but she kindly took time to translate the dish names for us. We felt like royalty, and even breakfast was a luxurious meal. Pension Todoroki clearly takes pride in its cooking and hospitality. We hope more people make the trip there.

A wonderful find. The young to middle-aged couple who run it are warm and sweet, and the food is fresh, delicious, and unusual. The outdoor onsen feels new and modern, and there's also a great private indoor one for couples.

A lovely, cozy place to stay in Atami. The building and service were great, and the open-air bath looked beautiful at night. Thanks to the staff, especially the lovely woman at reception.
