Nanasawa Onsen Ryokan Fukumatsu

The onsen water was very hot, and dinner was really good.

The staff were thoughtful throughout, and the meals are made by the young owner, who trained at a long-established restaurant. After check-in, each room can use the hot spring privately for an hour, then for 30 minutes the following morning. They call you on the internal phone when the bath is ready, and I assume they give it a quick clean or tidy between turns. The water quality differs from the other hot spring inns in Nanasawa Onsen, and sadly it doesn't have that silky smooth feel. Still, it's considerably more affordable than the others, so I was satisfied overall.

I stayed on my own on a weekday and found the dinner and breakfast included for 10,000 yen to be very good value. The food was delicious, I liked the cypress-scented towels, and the lemon sour was strong and tasty. The Wi-Fi was incredibly strong too. The place is old, though not dirty, and the facilities may not suit you if their age bothers you. The toilet seat is cold. You need to reserve the open-air bath, so you can't use it whenever you like. You can hear a lot from the hallway, but it isn't loud late at night, and it's quiet when you want to sleep.
