A few things to know: the entrance is locked at 11 pm, and guests are asked to lay out their own tatami. If having a shower in your room matters, choose the Japanese-Western room. Japanese-style rooms don’t include one, so you’ll need to shower in the onsen. Some reviews mention shabby interiors. Plenty of Japanese onsen hotels are old and can look worn after a long history, but that was fine with me as long as the place was clean, and this resort was. The hotel is near Kobe, with supermarkets and local farmers nearby where you can buy good fruit. It’s easy to drive to Awaji’s main tourist spots, the price is very reasonable, and it looked to me like all the rooms had a sea view.

The hotel is extremely dated. I understand wanting to keep a traditional feel, but not when there are no phone charging stations and the carpets and chairs have huge stains. They put six of us in a room that would fit three at most by Western hotel standards. We were packed in like sardines. Breakfast had no bread, and there wasn’t coffee anywhere before breakfast. For six people, three 0.3 l bottles of water were called a “complimentary service.” The staff also kept policing mask rules during our meal.

The room smelled damp and moldy as soon as we walked in, and there was a large wet patch on the floor near one bed. We don’t know what caused it. The hotel is badly dated and hasn’t been updated. Neither the 2.4Ghz nor 5Ghz internet they advertise worked when we arrived. An employee restarted the modem in our room, which got 2.4Ghz working, but it stopped again about an hour later. I couldn’t get any work done on the trip. Loose stones cover the balcony, and we tracked a ton inside just by going out and back in. Nobody was using the pool, and I can see why, since it costs a ridiculous 2,200¥. Business tip: charge 500¥ and you’d make much more in the first month. Awaji really needs more hotel options, so I’ll look for an AirBnb next time. I’d only stay here again as an absolute last resort.

The hot spring was very good. For getting to the coast, I’d choose somewhere other than the spot closest to the hotel.

Quiet and beautiful, and close to Kobe.
