Happy Neko

This clean, comfortable studio apartment is spacious and affordable, a good fit for two people. There’s a washing machine and a mini kitchen for light meals. Marushoku Yamanami Store, a local supermarket, is a five-to-seven-minute walk away. I’d definitely stay again when I visit Beppu. There are no shower or bath facilities in the toilet, but plenty of public bathhouses are nearby. Tani no Yu is just behind the apartment, about a one-minute walk, costs 150 yen, and is open until 9 pm. I personally liked it better than the bigger bath because the water quality seemed better and there were fewer people. The pool feels very rustic, like something from a Showa-era anime. Hyotan Onsen, with public and family rooms, is a five-minute walk, costs 1020 yen, and stays open until 1 am. Lots of other sento nearby cost around 150-200 yen. They’re not touristy, tattoos are okay, and you usually just drop the money in a box by the entrance and go in. For laundry, CoroCoroCoin Laundry Beppu Yamanami Store is about a ten-minute walk, across from the supermarket. It’s open 24 hours and includes detergent. Anytime Fitness and a 24-hour Lawson are in the same building. The apartment is in the heart of Kannawa, fairly close to a supermarket, convenience store, laundromat, Mcdonalds, onsens, sento, and the Jigoku hell tour. Shiraike Jigoku is only a ten-minute walk away. The Kannawa bus stop 1 and 2 are six minutes away on foot. Bus stop 1 goes to Beppu station. You can buy a Kamenoi bus all-day pass for $22 at the tourist information hub at Kannawa bus stop 2, and it gets you to yufuin in under an hour. Buses also go directly to Fukuoka Airport from that station. Try the Toriten, or tempura chicken, Jigokumushi Kobo's steamed vegetables and meat, soy sauce pudding, Onsen Tamago, and Dango Jiru, a miso soup with assorted vegetables and pork slices. On weekends and public holidays, the steam rising from the Kannawa hot spring is lit up at night. Don’t miss the Yukemuri light-up. The apartment host was very accommodating, and the guides he gave me were helpful for my three-day, two-night trip. Thank you for a wonderful stay！

It’s a cheap, well-located place with a supermarket and buses nearby, and lots of good onsens around. The room has everything, including fast, stable free Wi-Fi and a kitchen, but no bathroom. You’ll need to go to a nearby onsen to bathe. Thanks, I’ll come again next time.

We stayed in the Guest Room in the main house, which is the whole upper floor. There’s a lovely sleeping room, living room, restroom, and wraparound deck. The decor made us feel relaxed and well rested, and the rain made the night extra cozy. We even got to pet the Happy Neko! ^ - ^

Simple, but it had what we needed. No showers, though there are great onsens within walking distance. The Wi-Fi and heating worked well, and the host was very helpful. We recommend the yufu mountain hike too.
